Choosing a CO2 fire extinguisher
- Match it to the risk. CO2 gas is non-conductive and will not damage electrical equipment, so it suits fires involving live electrical equipment. It can also be used on Class B flammable liquid fires.
- Know its limits. CO2 does not cool burning material, so it is not suitable for Class A fires (wood, paper, textiles). Never use it on cooking oil or fat fires. For those, use a wet chemical fire extinguisher.
- Think about the space. CO2 displaces oxygen and can be harmful in confined spaces, so ventilate the area after use.
- Cover the other fire risks. CO2 does not cover Class A risks, so you may also need a water or foam fire extinguisher. Your fire risk assessment, or a competent person, should confirm the type, size and number you need.
