NVR vs DVR: which do you need?
An NVR records IP cameras over a network; the cameras encode their own video and a PoE NVR can also power them. A DVR records analogue HD cameras over coax and does the encoding itself. Choose an NVR for new IP systems and a DVR to upgrade existing coax installations. Some Hikvision Turbo HD DVRs are hybrid and accept IP cameras too.
How to choose a CCTV recorder
- Channels: match the camera count and leave spare channels for expansion.
- Resolution and bandwidth: check the maximum camera resolution, incoming bandwidth and decoding capacity against your cameras.
- PoE ports: a PoE NVR removes the need for a separate PoE switch on smaller systems.
- Storage: check the number of drive bays and whether a drive is included. For recording we stock Western Digital Purple surveillance drives, including the 4TB and 6TB models.
- Smart detection: AcuSense and WizSense recorders classify people and vehicles to cut false alarms.

NVR and DVR FAQs
What is an NVR in CCTV?
An NVR (network video recorder) records and manages video from IP cameras on a network, storing footage on internal hard drives for playback and remote viewing.
Which is better, NVR or DVR?
Neither is better in every case. NVRs suit IP cameras and higher resolutions; DVRs suit analogue HD cameras and reuse existing coax.
Do I need a hard drive for an NVR?
Yes, unless it has built-in storage like our eSSD models. Use a surveillance-rated drive such as WD Purple, sized to your cameras and required retention.
Can a DVR record IP cameras?
Some can. Hikvision hybrid DVRs such as the iDS-7208HUHI-M1/XT accept up to 16 IP camera inputs as well as analogue channels.
