How to choose a fire alarm battery
- Voltage: most 24V fire alarm panels and power supplies use two 12V batteries wired in series; intruder panels usually take a single 12V battery.
- Capacity (Ah): calculate it from the standby and alarm current and the required standby period, without exceeding the maximum battery the panel or PSU can house and charge.
- Flame retardant: choose an FR/V0 battery where the panel manufacturer or specification requires one.
- Replace in pairs: do not mix old and new batteries in a series pair.

What battery does a fire alarm panel take?
Most conventional and addressable fire alarm panels use 12V sealed lead acid (VRLA) batteries, normally two in series for 24V. The capacity, often 7Ah, 12Ah or 17Ah, depends on the panel and its load, so check the panel label or manual.
What is the difference between SLA and VRLA batteries?
They are the same type of battery: sealed lead acid batteries are valve regulated (VRLA), and most use AGM (absorbent glass mat) construction, so they are maintenance-free and spill-proof.
