How to choose the right call point key

Match the manufacturer and range. Call point keys are generally not universal. Check the brand and model of the installed call point, then pick the key listed for it.
Test key or reset key. Manufacturers use different names for the same job, so check the product title for the compatible call points rather than relying on the name.
Buy enough. Keys go missing on site. Packs of 5, 10 or, for Fike, 200 keep engineers, caretakers and responsible persons supplied.
Keep keys controlled. Store keys with the fire alarm log book or the responsible person, so call points cannot be operated or reset casually.

BS 5839-1 recommends a weekly test of the fire alarm by operating a different manual call point each week and recording the result in the log book. A test key makes this quick and avoids breaking glass.

Call point key FAQs

What is a fire alarm test key?

A fire alarm test key is inserted into a manual call point to put it into alarm without breaking the glass or element, so the system can be tested. On resettable call points the same key usually resets the unit.

Are fire call point keys universal?

No. Key shapes vary by manufacturer and sometimes by range, so match the key to the installed call point. A multi-key tool such as the Vimpex UGO can help engineers who work on several brands.

How do I use a call point test key?

Insert the key into the test or reset point on the call point to operate it, check that the panel shows the correct zone or device and that the sounders operate, then reset the call point with the key and reset the panel.
