Smoke Detector Testers

Smoke detector testers let fire alarm engineers prove that each detector responds to smoke, quickly and without damaging the device. We stock the professional Solo, Testifire and Scorpion ranges, from aerosol dispensers and smoke sprays to electronic and connected multi-sensor testers.

Smoke detector testers we stock

• Electronic smoke testers – the Solo 365 electronic smoke detector test kit, which uses non-pressurised, non-hazardous smoke cartridges, plus the Solo 365 Urban kit.
• Multi-sensor testers – the Testifire XTR2 all-in-one connected smoke and heat tester and the Testifire 2000/2001 smoke, heat and CO testers, as head units or kits.
• Test and removal kits – complete kits with access poles and removal tools, such as the Solo 811 (6m), Solo 812 (8.2m), Solo 814, 822 and 823, and Testifire 6201, 9201 and XTR2 6m and 9m kits.
• Aerosols and dispensers – Solo A10S non-flammable smoke aerosol, Solo A5 and A10 aerosols, SmokeSabre and the Solo 330 and 332 dispensers.
• Fixed testers – Scorpion point smoke detector tester kits and head units for detectors in hard-to-reach positions.
• Consumables and spares – Solo ES3 smoke cartridges, Testifire TS3 capsules, XTR2 smoke cartridges and generators, and spare cups and membranes.

How to choose a smoke detector tester

• Test volume – aerosols with a dispenser cup suit occasional testing; electronic and multi-sensor testers are quicker and cleaner for engineers testing large numbers of detectors.
• Detector types – if a site has heat, multi-sensor or CO detectors, a Testifire all-in-one tester covers several types with one head.
• Ceiling height – choose a kit whose pole length reaches your highest detectors, or add poles from our Solo access poles.
• Consumables – budget for replacement cartridges, capsules or aerosols to match the tester.

Smoke detector tester FAQs

How do you test a smoke detector?

Use a tester that introduces smoke or a smoke-like aerosol into the detector chamber, and confirm the detector and panel go into alarm. Never use a naked flame.

How often should smoke detectors be tested?

BS 5839-1 recommends that every detector in a commercial fire alarm system is functionally tested at least once a year, usually spread across routine service visits.

Can I use any smoke spray?

Use a product approved for detector testing, such as the Solo or SmokeSabre aerosols, to avoid contaminating the detector.
