How to choose an HID card reader
- Credential technology: match the reader to the cards and fobs already in use on site. The MiniProx reads 125kHz proximity credentials, while Signo readers support a much wider range of credential technologies, including mobile credentials.
- Controller interface: check which reader output your access control panel accepts before ordering. The MiniProx offers Wiegand or Clock-and-Data.
- Mounting position: mullion readers such as the Signo 20 are sized for narrow door frames. The MiniProx can be mounted directly onto metal without a change in read range.
- Termination: choose a terminal-strip or pigtail version to suit how the cabling is terminated at the door.

What is an HID card reader?
It is a door reader made by HID Global. It reads an access credential, such as a card, fob or (on Signo models) a mobile credential, and passes the data to the access control panel, which decides whether to release the door.
What is the difference between HID Signo and MiniProx?
The MiniProx is a simple 125kHz proximity reader. The Signo 20 belongs to HID's Signo platform, which supports a far wider range of credential technologies, secure key storage and mobile access via Bluetooth and NFC.
Can HID Signo readers use mobile credentials?
Yes. The Signo 20 supports HID Mobile Access via Bluetooth and NFC, and supports credentials in Apple Wallet through Enhanced Contactless Polling.
Will an HID reader work with my access control system?
Most access control panels accept standard reader outputs such as Wiegand, but always check the controller's supported interface and credential format against the reader specification before ordering.
