It works with an existing fire alarm control panel, and its on and off times can each be set up to 15 seconds to create a distinct ringing pattern. It has an 8A double pole changeover relay, an alarm status LED and a fire retardant ABS enclosure for surface or flush fitting, and runs on 24V DC.

How to plan a lockdown alarm

• Make it distinct. Use a tone, pulse pattern, voice message or beacon colour that cannot be mistaken for the fire alarm. The HAES relay's programmable pulse timing and the Klaxon's spoken message and blue lens both help with this.
• Decide how it is started. The HAES BRLDA is activated by key switch. Depending on the design, lockdown can also be started from panic buttons, an intruder alarm panel or an access control system.
• Cover the whole site. Make sure the alert can be heard or seen in classrooms, offices, halls, toilets and outdoor areas. Consider visual signals for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
• Support it with a procedure. Staff need to know the signal, what to do and how the all-clear is given, and the procedure should be practised.

Lockdown signalling must not affect the operation of the fire alarm. Any connection to a fire alarm system should be designed and installed by a competent person.
