Kitchen fire blankets
Glass-fibre blankets for small pan and cooking-oil fires in homes, staff rooms and commercial kitchens, in rigid or soft cases. Popular choices include the Firechief fire blanket 1 x 1m and 1.2 x 1.2m rigid cases, the CheckFire FB02, Jewel FB12 and Jactone Jacpack.
BS EN 1869 fire blankets
BS EN 1869:2019 is the British and European standard for fire blankets. It covers single-use blankets intended for use by one person to control small fires, including cooking-oil fires, and blankets that are large enough can also smother burning clothing. For a kitchen, choose a blanket marked to BS EN 1869 with a third-party mark such as the BSI Kitemark: the Firechief BPR2/K40 and Jewel FB12, for example, are listed as Kitemarked to it. Welding, battery and EV blankets are built for different risks, so check each listing for its rating.
Fire blanket sizes
- 1 x 1m and 1.1 x 1.1m: compact sizes for homes and small kitchens.
- 1.2 x 1.2m: a popular size for workplaces and commercial kitchens.
- 1.2 x 1.8m and 1.8 x 1.8m: more coverage for larger cooking areas and workshops.

The Firechief hot works welding blanket range comes in light, medium and heavy duty, in 1 x 1m, 1 x 2m, 2 x 2m and 2 x 3m sizes and 25m rolls. Shop the light duty 1 x 2m, medium duty 2 x 2m and heavy duty 2 x 2m.

Fire blanket FAQs
How do you use a fire blanket?
Call 999, pull the tabs sharply to release the blanket and keep your hands behind the fabric. Gently place it over the flames rather than throwing it, turn off the heat if it is safe to do so and leave the blanket in place.
Where should a kitchen fire blanket be mounted?
On a clearly visible wall near the cooking area, at a height where the tabs are easy to reach, but never directly above, behind or beside the hob or fryer.
Can a fire blanket be reused?
No. Blankets to BS EN 1869 are single use: replace one once it has been used on a fire.
