• Hispec SMART vape detector (HSSA/VAPE): the Hispec mains powered SMART vape detector uses a PM2.5 laser-scattering sensor to detect vaping and smoking. It connects to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and the Tuya Smart app for real-time monitoring and remote alarm notifications on phones and tablets, with adjustable sensitivity, tamper and offline notifications and shared access for several users. It is powered from the mains through the supplied plug adaptor and USB-C cable, has a green, yellow and red status LED, and can be wall or ceiling mounted.
• Takex VS1000E vape and smoking sensor: the Takex VS1000E vape and smoking sensor uses high-sensitivity particle detection with algorithms that adapt to changing conditions. It works stand-alone, without app-based management or licences. It has a built-in sounder and LED for local alerts, standard and low sensitivity settings, a selectable normally open or normally closed relay output for connection to existing alarm systems, a locking cover to resist tampering, self-diagnosis and a twist-lock base for ceiling or wall mounting.

How to choose a vape detector

• App alerts or wired integration. If staff want notifications on their phones, choose a Wi-Fi vape detector such as the Hispec HSSA/VAPE. If the alert needs to go into an existing intruder, access control or building management system, a relay output, as on the Takex VS1000E, is the simpler route.
• Network and licences. A Wi-Fi detector needs a reliable 2.4GHz signal at the mounting position. The Takex VS1000E runs without an app, account or licence.
• Power. The Hispec HSSA/VAPE runs from a mains plug adaptor via USB-C, so plan for a socket or suitable supply nearby. Check the Takex datasheet for its supply and wiring requirements before installation.
• Tamper resistance. Detectors in toilets and changing rooms are often targeted. The Hispec sends tamper notifications to the app, and the Takex has a locking cover and raises an alarm output and LED indication if its self-diagnosis finds a fault.
• Privacy. Both detectors work by sensing particles in the air, which makes them suitable for washrooms and other private areas where cameras cannot be used.

What is a vape detector?

A vape detector is a sensor that detects the aerosol from e-cigarettes and vapes and raises an alert, either locally with a sounder and LED, through an app, or through a relay output to another system.

Can a normal smoke detector detect vaping?

Fire smoke detectors are designed to detect fire, not to monitor vaping, so they are not a reliable way of catching it and can cause unwanted fire alarms. A dedicated vape detector is the better choice.

Where should vape detectors be installed?

Wherever vaping is a problem, typically toilets, washrooms, changing rooms, corridors and stairwells in schools and workplaces. Both detectors in this range can be mounted on a wall or ceiling.

Do vape detectors need Wi-Fi or a subscription?

It depends on the model. The Hispec HSSA/VAPE uses 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and the Tuya Smart app. The Takex VS1000E works without an app or licence and signals through its built-in sounder, LED and relay output.

Do vape detectors also detect cigarette smoke?

Yes. Both the Hispec HSSA/VAPE and the Takex VS1000E are designed to detect smoking as well as vaping.
