Heat Detector Testers

Heat detector testers apply controlled hot air to a heat detector so engineers can prove it responds, safely and without a naked flame. We stock mains-powered and cordless Solo heat testers, Testifire all-in-one testers and combined smoke and heat test kits.

Heat detector testers we stock

• Mains-powered heat testers – the Solo 424 (220/240V) and Solo 423 (110/120V), with the Solo 425 5m extension cable.
• Cordless heat testers – the Solo 461 cordless heat detector test kit, supplied with two battery batons, and the Solo 460 head unit.
• All-in-one testers – the Testifire XTR2 connected smoke and heat tester and Testifire 2000/2001 smoke, heat and CO testers, plus the XTR2 head adaptor for Fike heat detectors.
• Combined test and removal kits – Solo 814 (mains heat), Solo 822 and 823 (cordless heat), and Testifire XTR2, 6201 and 9201 kits in 5m to 9.3m reach.

How to choose a heat detector tester

• Power source – cordless testers avoid trailing leads and suit multi-site work; mains testers suit long testing sessions where power is on hand. On UK construction sites, 110V tools are often required, so choose the Solo 423 there.
• Detector types – the Solo 461 is suitable for fixed-temperature and rate-of-rise heat detectors. For sites with smoke, heat and CO detectors, an all-in-one Testifire saves carrying several heads.
• Reach – choose a kit with a pole long enough for your ceilings, or add Solo access poles.
• Batteries – for cordless testers, keep charged spare batons so testing is not interrupted.

Heat detector tester FAQs

How do you test a heat detector?

Place a heat tester over the detector and apply hot air until the detector goes into alarm, then confirm the signal at the panel. Never use a naked flame.

Can you test a heat detector with a hairdryer?

A purpose-made tester is the safe choice: it directs a controlled flow of heat at the detector and fits over it from floor level on an access pole.

How often should heat detectors be tested?

BS 5839-1 recommends that every detector in a commercial system is functionally tested at least once a year.
