How to choose cable and networking

• Standard or enhanced fire cable. FP200 Gold is standard grade and FP Plus is enhanced grade. The system design to BS 5839-1 or BS 5266-1 sets which grade each circuit needs.
• Use fire rated fixings. Support fire-resistant cable with metal clips or ties so it stays in place in a fire; plastic fixings alone are not enough.
• Size the PoE budget. Add up the power your cameras draw and pick a switch with enough PoE budget and ports.
• Match the fibre. SFP modules must suit the fibre type, connector, wavelength and distance of the link.

What is FP200 cable?

FP200 is Prysmian's fire-resistant cable range with a low smoke, zero halogen sheath. It is widely used for fire alarm and emergency lighting circuits, which must keep working during a fire.

What cable is used for fire alarms?

BS 5839-1 calls for fire-resisting cable on fire alarm circuits, in standard or enhanced grade depending on the building. FP200 Gold and FP Plus are common choices.

What is a PoE switch?

A PoE switch supplies power and data to IP cameras and other devices over one network cable.

What is the difference between smart and unmanaged PoE switches?

Unmanaged switches are plug-and-play. Smart switches add management features such as VLANs and, on Hikvision models, PoE watchdog to restart unresponsive cameras.
