Buy Evac+Chair evac chairs from JEM Systems UK: evacuation chairs for stairs that help trained operators move people with limited mobility safely in an emergency, plus storage and evacuation aids.
What is an evacuation chair?
An evacuation chair (or evac chair) is a folding chair designed to take a seated person down a stairway when lifts cannot be used, for example during a fire. A friction belt or track system controls the speed of descent, so the operator guides the chair rather than carrying the passenger. Chairs are stored near stairwells or refuge points to support Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs).

How to choose an evac chair
- Staircase: check stair width and shape – the 110 is built for narrow stairs and the IBEX for tight or spiral staircases.
- Direction of travel: most chairs are for descent; choose the 600H or IBEX if people may need to be moved up steps.
- Passenger and operators: consider payload (the 500H is built for heavier passengers) and how many trained operators will be available.
- Training and servicing: operators need training before use, and chairs should be serviced in line with the manufacturer’s instructions. We supply the equipment; training and servicing are arranged separately.

Evac chair FAQs
What is an evac chair used for?
To evacuate people who cannot use stairs unaided, such as wheelchair users or people with injuries, when lifts cannot be used in an emergency.
Is it a legal requirement to have an evac chair?
UK fire safety law does not name evacuation chairs, but the responsible person must ensure everyone can escape safely. Where the fire risk assessment or a PEEP identifies people who cannot use the stairs, an evacuation chair is a common way to meet that duty.
Can one person operate an evac chair?
Yes, models such as the 300H and 600H are designed for single-operator descent by a trained person. The 500H and IBEX are designed for two operators, and the 600H uses a team to go up steps.
