FP200 & Fire Alarm Cable

Fire-resistant cable is the wiring that keeps a fire alarm system working long enough to do its job. FP200 cable is the best-known type in the UK: a screened, low-smoke, halogen-free cable designed to maintain circuit integrity when exposed to fire. It is widely used for detector loops, sounder circuits and interconnections between fire alarm panels and devices. This collection brings together the FP200 Gold and FP Plus fire alarm cable we list, supplied in 100m lengths in red and white.

Standard or enhanced fire cable

BS 5839-1 distinguishes between standard and enhanced fire-resistant cable. Standard cable is tested to BS EN 50200 (PH30), while enhanced cable has to meet the more demanding PH120 rating and is typically specified where the cable must survive a fire for longer, such as on larger or more complex sites. Always check the system design or specification before choosing, as the required grade depends on the premises and the risk assessment.

Choosing the right cable

• Number of cores: 2 core cable suits most detector and sounder circuits, while 3 and 4 core options cover other wiring needs.
• Conductor size: 1.5mm and 2.5mm are the most common sizes, with 4mm available for longer or higher-load runs.
• Colour: red is the usual choice for fire alarm circuits, and white is available where a neutral finish is preferred.

Prysmian FP200 Gold and Prysmian FP Plus cables are available here, and the cable should be fixed with suitable fire-rated clips rather than plastic ties.
