Shop smoke detectors for commercial fire alarm systems: addressable and conventional optical detectors from leading manufacturers, plus mains and battery smoke alarms for homes.
Smoke detectors we supply
- Addressable smoke detectors – Apollo XP95, Discovery and Soteria (such as the XP95 Optical 55000-600APO and Soteria Optical SA5100-600APO), Hochiki ESP (ALN-EN), Notifier Opal (NFXI-OPT), Nittan Evolution, Zeta Infinity ID2, C-TEC CAST, Kidde Commercial and Edwards SIGA.
- Conventional smoke detectors – Apollo Series 65 (55000-317APO) and Orbis (ORB-OP-12001-APO), Hochiki CDX (SOC-E3N), Nittan EVC, C-TEC ActiV and Zeta Fyreye MKII.
- Specialist detection – intrinsically safe detectors such as the XP95 I.S. Optical, marine-approved models, wireless fire detection from Electro Detectors, and high-sensitivity detection from VESDA and AirSense (see beam and aspirating detection).
- Domestic smoke alarms – mains-powered and 10-year battery optical alarms from Aico (Ei650i), FireAngel, FireHawk and Hispec, including radio-interlinked models.
How to choose a smoke detector
- Match the panel. Addressable detectors only work with panels using the same protocol, for example Apollo (XP95, Discovery, Soteria), Hochiki ESP or Notifier Opal. Conventional detectors connect to zoned conventional panels; check the panel manufacturer's compatibility list.
- Choose the sensing type. Optical (photoelectric) detectors respond well to slow, smouldering fires and are the usual choice for escape routes and general areas. Where steam, dust or fumes are normal, a heat detector or multi-sensor detector is often more suitable.
- Order the right base. Most commercial detector heads are sold without a base. Choose a compatible standard, relay, diode, sounder or isolator base from our detector bases.
- Check the environment. Hazardous areas need intrinsically safe (I.S.) detectors, and vessels need marine-approved versions.

Smoke detector FAQs
What is the difference between a smoke detector and a smoke alarm?
A smoke detector is a sensor wired to a fire alarm control panel, which raises the alarm through the system's sounders. A smoke alarm is a self-contained unit with its own sounder and power supply (mains, battery or both), typically used in homes.
Optical or ionisation smoke detector?
Optical detectors are more responsive to smouldering fires and less prone to false alarms from cooking fumes than ionisation types. Ionisation detectors contain a small radioactive source and are now rarely specified in the UK, so this range focuses on optical detection.
Are addressable and conventional smoke detectors interchangeable?
No. An addressable detector reports its own address to the panel using a specific protocol, while a conventional detector signals an alarm on a zone. Always use detectors designed for your panel type and protocol.
Where should smoke detectors be fitted?
Positions and spacing should follow the fire risk assessment and system design, typically to BS 5839-1 for non-domestic premises or BS 5839-6 for dwellings. Avoid kitchens, bathrooms and dusty areas, where heat detection is usually more appropriate.
