Emergency bulkhead lights are robust, enclosed emergency luminaires for corridors, stairwells, plant rooms, entrances and outdoor escape routes. This range brings together LED emergency bulkheads from Advanced, CQR, Hispec and BLE, including IP65 surface-mounted, recessed, high-output and self-test models.

How to choose an emergency bulkhead
- Maintained or non-maintained: a maintained luminaire operates when either normal or emergency lighting is required; a non-maintained luminaire only lights when the normal mains supply fails. Compare our maintained emergency lighting and non-maintained emergency lighting.
- Testing: self-test and addressable models reduce the time spent on routine checks. Manual-test fittings are normally tested with an emergency light test key.
- Environment: choose IP65 fittings for damp, dusty or outdoor locations, and recessed versions where a flush ceiling finish is needed.
- Output and duration: check lumen output and rated emergency duration on each product page.
The number and position of luminaires should follow your fire risk assessment and an emergency lighting design to BS 5266-1 by a competent person.

Emergency bulkhead FAQs
What is an emergency bulkhead light?
It is a sealed, surface- or recess-mounted luminaire with an integral battery that provides light on escape routes when the mains supply fails. Many are IP65 rated for wet or outdoor areas.
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained bulkheads?
Maintained bulkheads stay lit as part of the normal lighting and continue on battery if power fails. Non-maintained bulkheads stay off until the mains supply fails.
Can an emergency bulkhead be used as an exit sign?
Some can. The Hispec Emerald is supplied with stick-on legends, and legend kits are available for Advanced Mor-LED, CQR Bulkhead Plus and BLE bulkheads in our illuminated exit signs range. Use one sign format throughout a building.
How often should emergency lighting be tested?
A short functional test monthly and a full rated-duration test annually, with results recorded in a log book. Self-test fittings carry out these routines automatically, but the results still need checking.
