How to choose a lithium-ion battery fire extinguisher
- Match it to the battery size. Where a manufacturer states a battery size limit, usually in watt-hours (Wh), choose a model that covers the largest battery on site.
- Look for test evidence. National and European standards for these extinguishers are still being developed, so look for testing to the Dutch NTA 8133 method or independent certification.
- Plan the wider response. Lithium-ion batteries can re-ignite after a fire appears to be out. Consider fire blankets (including lithium-ion battery blankets), safe storage cabinets and your fire risk assessment.
Safety note: London Fire Brigade advises that if an e-bike or e-scooter battery starts to smoke or catches fire you should get out, raise the alarm, call 999 and not try to tackle it yourself.

What fire extinguisher should I use for lithium batteries?
Choose an extinguisher designed and tested for lithium-ion battery fires, sized for the batteries on site, such as the LFX or Lith-Ex ranges. Check the manufacturer's stated battery size limits and follow your fire risk assessment.
Why are lithium-ion battery fires hard to put out?
A damaged, overcharged or overheated cell can go into thermal runaway, where heat builds faster than it can escape. The failure can spread from cell to cell, give off toxic gases and re-ignite after the flames are out.
What is AVD?
AVD stands for Aqueous Vermiculite Dispersion, the agent used in Firechief Lith-Ex extinguishers. Firechief says Lith-Ex quickly cools and forms a thermal barrier to stop fire propagation.
