- Fire extinguisher service tools – scales, gauge testers, headcap bars, nitrogen regulators, O-ring kits and engineer toolkits from CheckFire and Firechief. For parts, see extinguisher spares.
- Installer tools – detector and sounder removal tools, Haydon RJ45 crimpers and network testers, and Hispec LED work lights.
How to choose fire alarm test equipment
- Match the protocol. Addressable programmers and loop testers are brand-specific, so pick the one for the detectors and panel you service.
- Check your ceiling heights. Detector test kits reach up to 9.3m; above that, or over obstructions, permanently fitted Scorpion heads avoid access equipment.
- Cover every detector type. Smoke, heat, CO, flame and aspirating detectors each need the right stimulus or test tool.
- Stock the consumables. Keep spare aerosols, capsules and batteries in the van.

Fire alarm test equipment FAQs
What equipment do I need to test a fire alarm?
A typical service kit includes smoke and heat detector testers on an access pole, a detector removal tool, CO test gas where CO detectors are fitted, a call point test key and, for addressable systems, the manufacturer's programmer or loop tester.
Do you need to be qualified to test fire alarms?
The weekly call point test can be done by a trained responsible person. Periodic inspection and servicing under BS 5839-1 should be carried out by a competent person, usually a fire alarm engineer.
How often should smoke detectors be tested?
BS 5839-1 expects every detector to be functionally tested at least once a year, usually spread across the periodic service visits.
Which programmer do I need for addressable devices?
Use the programmer made for your device range, such as the Hochiki TCH-B200 for ESP devices or the Nittan EV-AD2 for Evolution.
