How to choose fire alarm accessories
- Protocol first: addressable devices must use the same protocol as the panel, such as Apollo, Hochiki or System Sensor. Conventional devices are often interchangeable, but check the panel maker's compatibility list.
- Isolation: use isolating bases or devices where BS 5839-1 requires a loop fault to be contained.
- Audibility and visibility: choose sounders to give the sound levels BS 5839-1 asks for, and add VADs where people may not hear the alarm.
- Environment: use weatherproof call points, sounders and bases outdoors or in damp areas.

A sounder gives an audible alarm. A visual alarm device (VAD) gives a flashing light for people who are deaf or hard of hearing or in noisy areas.
Do fire door holders connect to the fire alarm?
Yes. Mains or 24V door holders release when the fire alarm operates, and sound-activated holders release when they hear the alarm.
