• Master control panels – Cameo Orbital RS2 to RS32 panels (Orbital RS8), including the RS2-TA refuge and toilet alarm panel, C-TEC SigTEL controllers (ECU-8), Eaton VoCALL 5 and VoCALL 16 panels (MX16) and Kentec Safe-Point panels (K41208FST).
• Type B disabled refuge outstations – hands-free refuge call points in green or stainless steel, such as the C-TEC EVC302GF, plus weather-resistant and IP65 versions (Kentec K41400SST).
• Type A fire telephones – red or stainless steel handset outstations for firefighters, such as the C-TEC EVC302RLK, and Cameo combined refuge and fire telephone outstations (CRT/GRS/R).
• Accessories and signs – back boxes, bezels, network cards, a line tester and refuge signs (Disabled Refuge Point sign).

How to choose a disabled refuge system

• Type A or Type B. BS 5839-9 defines Type A outstations as handset fire telephones, mainly for firefighters, and Type B outstations as hands-free units, normally fitted at disabled refuges. Many buildings need both.
• Number of lines. Choose a master panel with enough lines for every outstation, plus spare capacity for later additions.
• Radial or loop wiring. Radial systems run a cable to each outstation. Loop-wired systems connect outstations on a loop protected by short-circuit isolators. Outstations and back boxes must match the panel's wiring type.
• Location. Use weather-resistant or IP65 outstations for external or damp areas.

Disabled refuge system FAQs

What is a disabled refuge system?

It is an emergency voice communication system that links refuge points to a master panel, so people who cannot use the stairs can call for help and speak to building staff during an evacuation.

Which standard covers EVC systems?

BS 5839-9 is the code of practice for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of emergency voice communication systems.

Can I mix outstations from different manufacturers?

Generally no. Outstations, back boxes and panels should come from the same compatible range, so check the datasheet before ordering.
