How to choose an access control system
- System type: a standalone keypad or controller suits one or two doors; networked or cloud-based systems add central user management, audit trails and multiple sites.
- Credential technology: match fobs and cards to the reader – 125kHz proximity, MIFARE or the manufacturer’s own encrypted tokens are not interchangeable.
- Locking: choose fail-safe or fail-secure hardware to suit the door, and size the power supply for the lock and readers.
- Escape routes: doors on escape routes need a reliable means of exit, usually an exit button plus an emergency door release and a fire alarm interface, as set out in the building’s fire strategy.

Access control FAQs
What does an access control system consist of?
Typically a credential (fob, card, PIN or face), a reader or keypad, a door controller, a locking device, an exit device, a power supply and, on networked systems, management software.
What are the main types of access control system?
Standalone systems such as Paxton Switch2 or codelocks, networked systems such as Paxton Net2, and IP or cloud-based platforms such as Paxton10 and Vanderbilt ACT365.
What is the difference between fail-safe and fail-secure?
A fail-safe lock releases when power is removed; a fail-secure lock stays locked. Maglocks are fail-safe by design, while electric strikes are available in both versions.
What is a maglock?
A magnetic lock is an electromagnet fitted to the frame that holds a steel armature plate on the door. Holding force is rated in kilograms, such as the 300kg and 500kg models in our CDVI range.
