About Fire Exit Signs
Shop fire exit signs for every escape route: running man signs with left, right, up, down and diagonal arrows, final exit, push bar to open and fire exit keep clear signs, in photoluminescent, vinyl, rigid plastic or brushed metal from Firechief, Jewel and CheckFire. The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations 1996 require escape routes and exits to be marked with safety signs where needed, and current fire exit signs use the ISO 7010 running man symbol with a directional arrow. Use signs alongside emergency lighting and fire door signage; see our guides to maintained and non-maintained emergency lighting and fire door regulations.
Fire exit signs we stock
- Running man and arrow signs in every direction, e.g. Firechief Fire Exit Left (photoluminescent) and CheckFire 214P Fire Exit Left 450 x 150mm.
- Double-sided signs for hanging or projecting mounting, such as the Firechief double-sided Fire Exit right or left.
- Final exit and door signs: Jewel final fire exit, push bar to open, push pad and turn to open.
- Keep clear and fire door signs: fire exit keep clear, fire escape keep clear and fire door keep shut.
- Illuminated exit signs such as the BLE Weston hanging exit sign with self test; see also emergency lighting.
Shop by brand: Firechief, Jewel and CheckFire.
Browse more by type: keep clear signs, fire door signs and photoluminescent signs. If you need an illuminated fire exit sign that stays lit from the emergency supply, see that range. The BS 5266 emergency lighting regulations guide explains how exit signs and emergency lighting work together.
Photoluminescent, vinyl, rigid or metal?
- Photoluminescent signs glow after exposure to normal light, so they stay visible for a time if the lighting fails. They supplement emergency lighting rather than replace it.
- Self-adhesive vinyl is economical and suits smooth surfaces such as doors and glazing.
- Rigid plastic is a durable, general-purpose choice for walls and doors.
- Brushed aluminium and stainless steel suit receptions, offices and hotels, e.g. Firechief brushed stainless steel Fire Exit Left.
How to choose the right fire exit sign
- Arrow direction: left or right means turn, up means straight on, and diagonal arrows indicate stairs or a change of level (e.g. down and left).
- Final exits: fit a final exit sign on or above the door that leads out of the building.
- One style: don't mix ISO 7010 running man signs with older designs in the same building.
- Size: larger signs (e.g. 450 x 150mm rather than 300 x 100mm) read better in long corridors and open areas.

Fire exit sign FAQs
Is it a legal requirement to have fire exit signs?
For most non-domestic premises, yes. In England and Wales the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires emergency routes and exits to be indicated by signs; Scotland and Northern Ireland have equivalent legislation. The fire risk assessment determines where signs are needed.
What colour are fire exit signs?
Green with white symbols and text, as they are safe condition signs. Red and white is used for fire equipment signs.
Where should fire exit signs be placed?
Wherever the way out is not obvious: at changes of direction, at stairs and changes of level, and at final exit doors, so the next sign on the route can be seen.
Do fire exit signs need to glow in the dark?
Not necessarily. Photoluminescent signs help if the lighting fails, but where emergency lighting is required, exit signs should be lit by it or be illuminated exit signs.
Are photoluminescent signs a legal requirement?
No. Photoluminescent signs are not a legal requirement in themselves. They are used to supplement emergency lighting, helping people see the route for a time if the power fails, and your fire risk assessment will confirm what your premises need.
