How to choose a power supply
- Voltage: match the output (12V or 24V DC, or AC for some CCTV and door entry kit) to the equipment.
- Current: add up the maximum load of every device and allow for battery charging current and some spare capacity.
- Standby batteries: check the largest battery the enclosure holds and the charger supports, then choose batteries to give the standby time the system needs.
- Standards: use an EN 54-4 PSU on fire detection and alarm systems, and a PSU of the correct EN grade for intruder alarm systems.

Power supply FAQs
What is an EN 54-4 power supply?
EN 54-4 is the European standard for power supply equipment used in fire detection and fire alarm systems. It covers mains and standby battery operation, battery charging and fault monitoring.
Can I use a standard 24V power supply on a fire alarm system?
No. A fire alarm system should be powered by EN 54-4 power supply equipment with a monitored standby battery, not a general-purpose 24V PSU.
12V or 24V – which do I need?
Fire alarm devices and door retainers are usually 24V, while intruder alarm, access control and many CCTV devices are 12V. Always follow the equipment manufacturer's data sheet.
What batteries does a PSU take?
Most boxed PSUs take one or two 12V sealed lead acid batteries. The maximum size, for example 2 x 7Ah or 2 x 17Ah, is given in the product title or data sheet.
