How to choose a water fire extinguisher
- Fire class – water is for Class A fires only. Where there are flammable liquids or electrical risks, pair it with foam or CO2 as your fire risk assessment requires.
- Fire rating – compare the rating on the label (for example 13A, 21A or 27A). Additives boost performance, so a 6 litre additive unit can outperform standard 6 litre water and weigh less than 9 litres.
- PFAS – some water additives contain PFAS; choose a model marked PFAS-free or fluoro-free if you want to avoid them.
- Location – water can freeze, so outdoors use a low-freeze model or a cabinet.
- Maintenance – choose extinguishers made to BS EN 3 and have them serviced by a competent person in line with BS 5306-3.
