How to choose a disabled refuge system

• Type A or Type B. BS 5839-9 defines Type A outstations as handset fire telephones, mainly for firefighters, and Type B outstations as hands-free units, normally fitted at disabled refuges. Many buildings need both.
• Number of lines. Choose a master panel with enough lines for every outstation, plus spare capacity for later additions.
• Radial or loop wiring. Radial systems run a cable to each outstation. Loop-wired systems connect outstations on a loop protected by short-circuit isolators. Outstations and back boxes must match the panel's wiring type.
• Location. Use weather-resistant or IP65 outstations for external or damp areas.
