How to choose an illuminated exit sign
- Viewing distance: for an internally illuminated sign, the maximum viewing distance is 200 times the height of the sign panel; for an externally lit sign it is 100 times.
- Sign format: do not mix sign formats on one installation. Extend an existing system in its current format; for new installations, industry guidance (ICEL) recommends the ISO 7010 format.
- Operation: many exit signs are maintained, so they stay lit at all times; several here can be set to either mode.
- Testing: self-test and addressable models simplify routine checks.

Do fire exit signs need to be illuminated?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, emergency routes and exits must be indicated by signs, and those requiring illumination must have emergency lighting if the normal lighting fails. Guidance on BS 5266-1 is that escape signs are illuminated, internally or externally, so they stay conspicuous and legible. Your fire risk assessment and a competent designer will confirm what your premises need.
What is the difference between EC and ISO 7010 exit signs?
They use different running-man pictograms. Both are still found in buildings. ISO 7010 is the format recommended for new installations, and formats should not be mixed on one installation.
How far away can an exit sign be read?
For an internally illuminated sign, up to 200 times the panel height. A 175mm-high sign therefore gives up to 35 metres.
Can I change the arrow direction?
Many can. Replacement arrow legends for Advanced, CQR, BLE and EasySafe signs are sold separately in this collection.
