How do you test a smoke detector?
Use a tester that introduces smoke or a smoke-like aerosol into the detector chamber, and confirm the detector and panel go into alarm. Never use a naked flame.
How often should smoke detectors be tested?
BS 5839-1 recommends that every detector in a commercial fire alarm system is functionally tested at least once a year, usually spread across routine service visits.
Can I use any smoke spray?
Use a product approved for detector testing, such as the Solo or SmokeSabre aerosols, to avoid contaminating the detector.
