How to choose an emergency downlight
- Lens: corridor lenses throw light along escape routes; open area lenses give a wide, symmetrical spread for rooms. Open area (anti-panic) lighting applies to floor areas larger than 60m².
- Mounting: recessed downlights suit suspended or plasterboard ceilings; surface-mount versions suit solid ceilings.
- Operation: choose non-maintained or maintained, and addressable models if the site uses an automatic test system.
- Environment: weatherproof versions are available for damp or exposed areas.
Spacing and positions should come from an emergency lighting design to BS 5266-1 and your fire risk assessment.

What is an emergency downlight?
It is a compact ceiling luminaire with a battery that lights escape routes or open areas when the normal lighting fails. Most are non-maintained, so they stay off until the mains supply fails.
Should I choose a corridor or open area lens?
Use a corridor lens on escape routes and an open area lens in rooms and larger spaces. Some models, such as the CQR Downlight Spot, come with both lenses.
Can an emergency downlight also be the main light?
Yes. Maintained models and combined fittings such as the Lumi-Plugin emergency downlights provide everyday lighting and switch to battery if the power fails.
How often should emergency downlights be tested?
A short functional test monthly and a full rated-duration test annually, recorded in a log book. Self-test and addressable models automate this.
