How to choose a smoke or heat alarm

• Smoke or heat. Optical smoke alarms suit hallways, landings and living areas. Heat alarms suit kitchens and areas where fumes, steam or dust would cause false alarms.
• Mains or battery. Mains alarms with battery back-up are hard-wired, usually in new builds and rewires. Sealed 10-year battery alarms are quick to fit where new wiring is not practical.
• Interlinking. Interlinked alarms all sound together, so a fire anywhere is heard throughout the property. Radio-interlinking avoids interconnect cables, but alarms only link with compatible models from the same range.

Where should a heat alarm be fitted?

Heat alarms are normally ceiling-mounted in kitchens, and sometimes garages, where a smoke alarm would false alarm. They should be interlinked with the smoke alarms so every alarm sounds.

At what temperature does a heat alarm go off?

Most domestic heat alarms use a fixed-temperature sensor that triggers at around 58°C. Check the datasheet for the exact figure.

Can I mix brands on an interlinked system?

Generally no. Hard-wired and radio interlink signals are manufacturer-specific, so use alarms, bases and modules from the same compatible range.
