Fire Extinguishers

Buy fire extinguishers for commercial, industrial and construction sites: water, foam, CO2, dry powder, wet chemical, water mist and lithium-ion battery models from Firechief, Commander, Jewel, Ceasefire and Jactone. Portable ranges such as Firechief CTX and Commander are Kitemarked to BS EN 3 (see each product page).

Fire extinguisher types and fire classes

• Water fire extinguishers – Class A fires (wood, paper, textiles). Not for flammable liquids, cooking oil or live electrical equipment. E.g. Firechief CTX 6L Water.
• Foam fire extinguishers – Class A and B (flammable liquids), including fluorine-free options such as the Commander 6L Fluorine Free Foam.
• CO2 fire extinguishers – Class B and electrical equipment, leaving no residue, e.g. the Commander 5kg CO2. Not rated for Class A.
• Dry powder fire extinguishers – ABC powder covers Class A, B and C and electrical fires, e.g. the Commander 6kg ABC Powder. Generally not recommended in enclosed spaces, so best for vehicles, forecourts and outdoor sites. Specialist M28 and L2 powders such as the Jewel 8kg M28 are for Class D metal fires.
• Wet chemical fire extinguishers – Class F cooking oil and fat fires in commercial kitchens, e.g. the Jewel 6L Wet Chemical.
• Water mist fire extinguishers – de-ionised water mist, e.g. the Firechief PureSafe 6L. Ratings vary by model, so check the label.
• Lithium-ion battery extinguishers – Firechief Lith-Ex and CheckFire LFX for e-bikes, scooters, laptops and power tools.

We also stock automatic extinguishers from Ceasefire and Fireblitz, wheeled units, powder aerosols, and site kits such as the Firechief Construction Site Bundle.

How to choose a fire extinguisher

• Identify the fire classes present in each area; many sites pair a water or foam unit with a CO2 unit near electrical equipment.
• Add wet chemical in kitchens and lithium-ion units where batteries are charged or stored.
• Size and position extinguishers following your fire risk assessment and BS 5306-8, and have them serviced annually by a competent person (BS 5306-3).
• Finish the installation with extinguisher stands, cabinets, brackets and covers, extinguisher ID signs and fire blankets.

Fire extinguisher FAQs

Which fire extinguisher is used for electrical fires?

CO2 is the usual choice for electrical equipment because it leaves no residue. ABC dry powder is also suitable, particularly outdoors.

Which extinguisher should you not use on a flammable liquids fire?

Water. Plain water extinguishers are for Class A fires only; use foam, CO2 or dry powder on Class B flammable liquids.

What fire extinguisher is used for cooking oil?

A wet chemical extinguisher, designed for Class F cooking oil and fat fires.

What colour are fire extinguishers in the UK?

BS EN 3 requires a red body; in the UK a coloured band or label identifies the contents: red for water, cream for foam, black for CO2, blue for dry powder and yellow for wet chemical.
