How to choose the right battery
- Capacity: work out the standby and alarm load for the system and size the battery from the panel manufacturer's battery calculation. Do not guess from the old battery alone.
- Voltage: most 24V fire panels use two 12V batteries of the same capacity connected in series.
- Terminals: F1 (4.8 mm) and F2 (6.3 mm) spade terminals are common on smaller blocks, while larger batteries such as the PS-12180FR use M5 bolt terminals.
- Flame-retardant cases: choose FR versions where the panel or specification asks for them.
- Replace in pairs: replace both batteries of a series pair together so they charge and discharge evenly.

Power Sonic battery FAQs
What does FR mean on a Power Sonic battery?
FR stands for flame retardant. The battery case is made from a flame-retardant material, which some fire panels and specifications require.
Is Powersonic the same as Power Sonic?
Yes. Powersonic and Power-Sonic are common spellings of the same battery brand.
Can I use a higher capacity battery than the one fitted?
Often yes, if it fits the enclosure and the panel charger is rated for it. Check the panel manual for the largest battery it can charge.
How often should fire alarm batteries be replaced?
Batteries should be checked at every service. Replace them when they fail a load test or when the panel manufacturer or maintenance company recommends it.
