An access control card reader is the device at the door that reads a card, fob or tag and passes the credential to the controller, which decides whether to release the lock. This collection brings together proximity readers, smart card readers and reader and keypad combinations for new installations and for replacing existing units.
How to choose a card reader
Technology: 125kHz proximity readers read basic EM-style credentials, while 13.56MHz readers support MIFARE Classic, MIFARE Plus and DESFire cards, which offer stronger encryption. Always match the reader to the cards or fobs already in use, or plan to change both together.
Communication: Many readers use Wiegand or clock and data output to talk to the controller, while newer systems may use OSDP or a manufacturer's own protocol. Confirm that the reader and controller are compatible before ordering.
Environment: Check the IP and IK ratings for external doors, and choose a mullion, square or back box style to suit the door frame. Keypad models add a PIN for dual-factor entry.
Typical uses
Card readers are used on office entrances, stairwells, plant rooms, car park barriers and internal secure areas, and with standalone door units as well as networked systems.
