Magnetic door locks (maglocks) for access-controlled doors: surface-mounted single and double magnets, monitored and unmonitored versions, slimline models and shearlocks from CDVI, RGL, CQR, Magnetic Solutions and other makers. A maglock is an electromagnet fixed to the door frame that holds a steel armature plate on the door, so the door is released as soon as power is removed.
Choosing a maglock
Holding force: internal doors typically use locks rated at around 180 to 300 kg, while external or heavy-use doors typically call for 500 kg or more. Always check the manufacturer data sheet for the rating of the exact model.
Monitoring: monitored versions report lock and door status back to your controller or alarm system.
Mounting: choose surface, flush shearlock, transom or double-door versions to suit the frame. Brackets, armature housings and straps are listed separately in maglock brackets and accessories.
Power: size a regulated supply for the lock current plus any readers; see power supplies.
Maglock FAQs
Are maglocks fail-safe or fail-secure?
Maglocks are fail-safe: they unlock when power is lost or switched off. If a door must stay locked without power, an electric strike or other fail-secure lock is the usual alternative.
Do I need an exit device with a maglock?
Yes. Without a credential, people still need a way to leave, so fit an exit button or request-to-exit device and, on escape routes, an emergency door release as set out in the building fire strategy. Browse exit buttons.
What controls a maglock?
A reader and controller from our access control range, or a standalone keypad, switches the lock supply.
