How to choose a fire door retainer
- Wired or wire-free: hard-wired holders are connected to the fire alarm system; acoustic units need no cabling, which suits retrofits.
- Voltage: match 24V DC or 230V AC holders to the available supply.
- Holding force: rated in newtons, 200N to 1200N here; heavier doors and draughty corridors need more.
- Mounting: wall, floor or flush fixing, with brackets and extension lengths to reach the door.
- Closer: a retainer only holds the door open; the door still needs a closer, sized to its width and weight, to shut it.

Fire door retainer FAQs
What is a fire door retainer?
A device that holds a fire door open and releases it when the fire alarm operates, so the closer can shut it and limit the spread of fire and smoke.
Can you hold a fire door open?
Fire doors should never be wedged open. Where the fire risk assessment allows, they can be held open by an automatic release device linked to the fire alarm; BS 7273-4 covers the actuation of door release mechanisms.
How does a Dorgard work?
A Dorgard fits to the bottom of the door and holds it open with a rubber foot. It listens for the fire alarm and releases the door when the alarm sounds.
What is the difference between a door holder and a door closer?
A closer shuts the door; a holder keeps it open until released. Hold-open closers such as the Rutland Responder combine both.
