Choosing emergency lighting
- Maintained or non-maintained. Maintained lights are lit all the time and stay on when the mains fails, which suits exit signs and public areas. Non-maintained lights only come on when the supply fails, common on escape routes and in stairwells. Many fittings, such as the CQR Bulkhead Plus, can be set to either.
- Duration. M3 and NM3 mean maintained or non-maintained with a 3-hour duration, the most commonly specified rating.
- Self-test or manual. Self-test lights run their own tests and show the result on an indicator; manual fittings are tested with a key switch.
- Environment. Choose IP65 for outdoor, wet or dusty areas.
- Standard. UK emergency lighting is normally designed, installed and tested to BS 5266-1 by a competent person.

Emergency lighting FAQs
What is the difference between maintained and non-maintained emergency lighting?
Maintained emergency lights are on continuously and keep working in a power cut. Non-maintained lights stay off while the mains is healthy and switch on automatically only when it fails.
How often should emergency lighting be tested?
BS 5266-1 recommends a short functional test every month, simulating a mains failure with a test key switch, and a full-duration test once a year, recorded in a log book. Self-test fittings run these automatically, but results still need checking and recording.
What are the legal requirements for emergency lighting?
In England and Wales, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires emergency routes and exits that need illumination to have emergency lighting of adequate intensity if normal lighting fails. BS 5266-1 is the code of practice normally used to meet this.
What is a twin spot emergency light?
A twin spot has two adjustable lamp heads on one body, used to light large open areas such as warehouses and halls when the mains fails. We stock Advanced Twin-LED spotlights, including a weatherproof IP65 version.
