How to choose a Hikvision CCTV system

• IP or Turbo HD: for new installations, IP cameras with a PoE NVR carry power and video over one network cable. Where coax is already installed, Turbo HD cameras and a DVR can raise picture quality without re-cabling.
• Resolution and lens: 4MP suits most general views; 8MP (4K) gives more detail across wider scenes. A 2.8mm lens gives a wide view, while varifocal lenses suit narrower, more distant areas.
• Night-time imaging: ColorVu and Smart Hybrid Light models can record colour at night; standard IR models record in black and white in darkness.
• Recorder: allow spare channels for future cameras, check the recorder supports your cameras' resolution, and size the hard drive for the retention period you need.

Hikvision FAQs

Are Hikvision cameras allowed in the UK?

Yes, they can be bought and installed for commercial and residential use. In 2022 the UK government told its departments to stop installing Chinese-made surveillance cameras on sensitive government sites, so check any public-sector client's procurement policy before specifying.

What is the difference between a Hikvision NVR and a DVR?

An NVR records IP cameras over a network, and PoE models can power the cameras directly. A DVR records Turbo HD analogue cameras connected over coax.

What is Hikvision AcuSense?

AcuSense uses deep learning to tell people and vehicles apart from other movement, helping to cut false alarms caused by animals, foliage or weather.

What is Hikvision ColorVu?

ColorVu cameras pair a wide-aperture lens and sensitive sensor with soft supplementary light, so they can produce colour images around the clock.

What is the difference between ColorVu and DarkFighter?

ColorVu aims for colour images in low light using a wide-aperture lens and supplementary light. DarkFighter is a low-light sensor and lens technology that typically records in black and white with IR in full darkness.

How many cameras can a Hikvision NVR support?

It depends on the model's channel count (commonly 4, 8, 16, 32 or more) and total incoming bandwidth. Check the datasheet for channels, maximum resolution and hard drive capacity.

Can I use Hikvision cameras with another brand's recorder?

Many Hikvision IP cameras support ONVIF, so they can often work with third-party recorders, but some features such as AcuSense analytics may be limited. Check compatibility before buying.
