Choosing a dry powder fire extinguisher
- Match it to the risk. ABC powder covers Class A (solids), Class B (flammable liquids) and Class C (flammable gases). It can also be used on electrical equipment up to 1000 V. It suits garage forecourts, workshops, boiler rooms, construction sites and vehicles.
- Avoid enclosed spaces. Powder is not recommended for use in enclosed spaces. The discharge can obscure vision and be inhaled, and the residue is difficult to clean up. For offices and other indoor areas, your fire risk assessment may point to foam, water or CO2 fire extinguishers instead.
- Know its limits. Powder does not cool the fire, so there is a risk of re-ignition. Never use it on cooking oil fires (Class F). Use a wet chemical fire extinguisher for those.
- Specialist risks. Fires involving flammable metals, such as magnesium and titanium, need a specialist Class D powder. Ask a competent person to confirm the right agent for your materials.
