The Ceasefire SPM-PYRO (Speciality Powder for Metals - Pyro) 4kg extinguisher (CF-000040A) is designed for Class D fires involving combustible metals that burn at very high temperatures. Metal fires react violently with water and cannot be tackled safely with multipurpose extinguishers, so a specialist dry powder agent is required.
SPM-PYRO uses a chloride and phosphate based powder that melts and fuses at around 1,200°C, forming a hard crust on the burning metal that cuts off the oxygen supply. This makes it effective on alkali metal fires, as well as fires involving heavy metals and their alloys, such as titanium, lead, copper, tungsten, cobalt and manganese.
